Some people may think that there are no serious attempts for banning all advertising. Definitely there are.
First of all advertising is very expensive. Billions of dollars spent on it could be used for productive purposes. In other words, people who prepare commercials would start to do something really profitable to the society. On the other hand nobody would be forced to look at stupid and (which is not so sure) disgusting or even offending posters. What is more one would note have to make brakes during films. It may seem that the social welfare would be undoubtedly increased.
Such judgment is, in my opinion unjustified. Advertising fulfils may social functions. Sponsoring sport and cultural events is the least important. Although we should realise that some of them (including many TV stations) would never function without the support of profit-seeking businessmen . The most significant argument for advertising is that it provides people with information about their needs and possibilities to fulfil them. Without it many new innovative products would have never been introduced, because there would be no way to inform their potential buyers of their superior qualities. High Research and Development costs would not pay off if a producer had to wait until information spread slowly from customer to customer. Another problem is how to distinguish illegal advertisement from unsuspicious use of the product .
